Chief Minister Jon Stanhope officially re-opened the new Recreational Equestrian Trails at Stromlo Forest Park on May 17 2008.
Stromlo Forest Park includes equestrian access points to the Park; a crossing point on Holden’s Creek; a horse trough and hitching rail at Blue Gums; safe crossing points with the mountain bike downhill track; entry and way finding signage; and a horse trailer car park on Uriarra Road.
The trails are the final facility to be opened in the park, which caters for walkers, runners, cyclists and equestrian activities - all only seven kilometres from the city centre.
“Today’s official re-opening of the Recreational Equestrian Trails is something of a double celebration, marking the opening of the new facilities and the end of what has been a tough year for recreational riders as we have sought as a community to prevent the entry into the ACT of equine influenza.
“Improvements made at Stromlo to meet the needs of horse riders include grading and repair works to the designated trails, access points to the Park, a crossing point on Holden’s Creek and a horse trough and hitching rail at Blue Gums. Other improvements are the safe crossing points with the mountain bike downhill track, entry and way finding signage, and a horse trailer car park on Uriarra Road.
“The Park now has a purpose-built event pavilion, criterium cycling circuit, grass cross country running track, mountain bike tracks capable of hosting national and international events, as well as trails suitable for use by horse riders, runners and bush walkers.
“In the recent ACT Budget I announced a feasibility study into a chairlift for the downhill facility, an extra $1.7 million for upgrades of other facilities and another $230,000 for additional tree plantings in the Park.
“Stromlo Forest Park represents a $7.5 million ACT Government investment in promoting healthy activities in our great outdoors.”

Stromlo Forest Park is a shared public facility with designated trails for bike riders, walkers and equestrians. Trails are clearly marked and colour coded and there are specific rules for their use.
