Cross Country

 

CROSS COUNTRY (XC)

- Observe and follow all signage placed on the trail at all times.

- Share the trail with other users.

- All users must wear a helmet (Australian Standard Certified)at all times.

- Use appropriate riding equipment including: gloves, enclosed footwear, goggles, kneepads, shin guards, elbow pads and covered clothing and well maintained bike equipment.

- Trail has been designed as a one-way only trail, follow trail directional markers when riding. Riding the trail in the wrong direction will cause significant damage to the trail and potential injury to yourself and other users.

- Plan your ride, know the distance and approximate ride time of the trail you intend to ride, take appropriate food and water.

- Yield to faster riders. - Don’t take shortcuts; ride only on the trails provided.

- Ride within your ability – use the provided alternative riding lines to navigate difficult sections.

- Riding obstacles are present on the trail, please observe and navigate appropriately. 

- Trail use may be restricted for safety reasons at various times or for special events.

- Organisers of a planned event may change user procedures at their discretion and must advise all users of these changes prior to their participation.

- Pedestrians must stay off the trail at all times and only cross with extreme care.

- Mountain Bikes must only be ridden on approved trails, which have been mapped out by venue management. Work on or the construction of new trails or jumps is prohibited without prior written approval by the venue management.- Read and understand the trail grading's illustrated below.

- Warning: Some users will be traveling at speeds up to 50km/hour, take care.

- All users are to yield to horses. Never pass a horse without first getting the rider’s attention. When overtaking from behind, call out and ask permission of the rider to pass. A spooked horse is a danger to you, the rider and other users.

- MTB’s are not permitted on designated equestrian trails. Horses are not permitted on MTB trails. Exercise caution where these trails intersect.

Sporting activities at Stromlo Forest Park maybe dangerous and may result in injury or death to the person &/or property loss or damage. Users participating and spectators viewing these activities do so at their own risk.

To the extent permitted by law, the Australian Capital Territory excludes all liability, including but not limited to liability for personal injury, death, property damage, property loss, and consequential loss or damage of any kind arising from the use of &/or entry to Stromlo Forest Park, whether in contract, by negligent act or omission, or any other tortious action.

Trail Etiquette for MTB Users

- Obey all signage at Stromlo Forest Park.

- Courtesy is the best safety on the trail. Remember that your behaviour is a reflection on the MTB community as a whole.

- Other trail users may not be familiar with the MTB trails. Talk to them about their use, directions and safety.

- Know the local trail rules. Minimise your impact by staying on the MTB trails.

- Stromlo Forest Park has designated Mountain Bike (MTB) and equestrian trails. Cyclists are not permitted to use designated equestrian trails. Equestrians are not permitted to use designated MTB trails. Other fire trails are open to both equestrians and cyclists.

- Equestrians have the right of way over other users on all trails. This is an international standard. Walkers have next priority and then cyclists.

- Cyclists should yield to horses by stopping and asking permission of the horse rider to pass.

- Cyclists must allow horse riders time to position their horses for safety.

- Cyclists should not ring bells as they may startle a horse - voice contact is preferable. A frightened horse is a danger to you, the horse rider and other park users.

- It is advisable not to pass within a meter of a horse as they may kick if startled and have considerable reach.

- Pass other trail users with care and travel in single file on busy trails.

- Slow down at intersections where you are likely to meet MTB and equestrian trail intersections and watch for other users.

- Ride your MTB at a controlled speed, especially approaching blind corners.

- Keep to the right when passing other users.

- Carry a mobile phone, especially if you are riding on your own. Know who to call in an emergency, either 000 or a friend or park management.

Stromlo Forest Park is a shared public facility with designated trails for bike riders, walkers and equestrians. Trails are clearly marked and colour coded and there are specific rules for their use.
